Catherine Harrison

Instrumental Music

A highly qualified and experienced teacher of instrumental and academic music, I am a graduate of St Andrews, Liverpool and Open universities. I have been teaching instrumental music for many years, in the primary, secondary, FE and HE institutions. My music pupils have gone on to professional work in TV, radio and film, as well as top universities. Pupils range from beginners to advanced, children and adults.

I specialise in teaching piano to diploma level and Music Theory Grade V (ABRSM). From the start of learning, the uptake of notation, an understanding of the harmonic structure of music and the communication of musical ideas using voice is developed. Adult learners or returners are especially welcome. I have an interest in performance anxiety issues and have developed strategies for overcoming them.

Hannah Riley

Dance and Singing Teacher

Hannah has joined the CHM team to deliver individual dance and singing tuition. A graduate of the prestigious Liverpool Theatre School, where she specialised in Dance and Music Theatre, Hannah has been working professionally as a dancer, singer and actor, in film, theatre, pantomime, TIE and on cruise ships, since she was nineteen.

Hannah’s dance and singing training instils a deep-seated confidence in her students that carries beyond dance and singing performance into everyday life. Her teaching ethos derives from her belief that being creative helps you, day to day, in academic and life terms.

Individual Dance Lessons with Hannah

Hannah is offering training in jazz, commercial and tap to adults and children. Ballet training underpins all her teaching. This fosters good technique, spatial awareness and muscle development. Lessons are fun, intensive and student-centred. Students may take exams in dance, if they wish.

For those students who wish to pursue a professional dance career, Hannah provides training that equips them, mentally and physically, for the tough auditions ahead. However, increasingly, parents and students are realising that performing arts can be done to a very high level alongside academic courses. Whether you go on to be a scientist, a teacher or an engineer, dance training instils vital life skills and a positive, healthy physical and mental state.

The results of Hannah’s teaching extend well beyond the dance studio. Training strengthens the skeleton through stretch, weight-bearing and flexibility exercises. Benefits reported by Hannah’s adult and school-age dance students include:

Increased confidence, concentration and fitness levels.
Feeling healthier, happier and more positive about oneself and one’s life.

Individual Singing Lessons with Hannah

Hannah offers Music Theatre (MT) and popular music singing lessons and exam and audition preparation to adults and children. Singing is an important aspect of training for aspirant dance professionals. However, many of Hannah’s singing students are not dancers. They are focussed on the acting and performance aspects of MT and popular singing styles. As well as improving breathing technique, diction, communication, lessons ensure the improvement of tone and the expansion of vocal range.
