Lessons tailored to your needs
A highly qualified and experienced teacher of instrumental and academic music, I am a graduate of St Andrews, Liverpool and Open universities. I have been teaching instrumental music for many years, in the primary, secondary, FE and HE institutions. My music pupils have gone on to professional work in TV, radio and film, as well as top universities. Pupils range from beginners to advanced, children and adults.
My earliest piano heroes are Oscar Peterson and Anna Markland, who exploded into my consciousness in 1982. Before then, I had liked composers and pieces rather than players per se, but seeing Oscar accompany my idol Ella Fitzgerald, transformed my thinking about performance, and the importance of jazz.
– Oscar Peterson, jazz piano virtuoso
– Sergei Rachmaninov, composer and concert pianist.
Once pupils have developed strong technical skills and confidence, I encourage those who want to take it further to make music with others. This can happen through joining or forming a band, joining a choir (develops aural skills better than anything) and recording. I have strong links with Ian Lewis’s excellent recording studio where many of my music students and associates have recorded. Check out this recording of my vocal band, Soundwall, which I formed in 2011. Since then we have raised over £13k for charities, including Alzheimers, Christies, MSF and HOGS. Several of my music pupils are in Soundwall, which has performed at prestigious UK venues including Theatr Clwyd and the Edinburgh Fringe.
