Lessons tailored to your needs

A highly qualified and experienced teacher of instrumental and academic music, I am a graduate of St Andrews, Liverpool and Open universities. I have been teaching instrumental music for many years, in the primary, secondary, FE and HE institutions. My music pupils have gone on to professional work in TV, radio and film, as well as top universities. Pupils range from beginners to advanced, children and adults.

My earliest piano heroes are Oscar Peterson and Anna Markland, who exploded into my consciousness in 1982. Before then, I had liked composers and pieces rather than players per se, but seeing Oscar accompany my idol Ella Fitzgerald, transformed my thinking about performance, and the importance of jazz.

I believe in using the entire piano as a single instrument, capable of expressing every possible musical idea.

– Oscar Peterson, jazz piano virtuoso
In the same year, I saw on TV Anna Markland win Young Musician of the Year in 1982 with Rachmaninov’s 2nd Piano Concerto. That concerto remains a firm favourite of mine, all these years later. Eighteen year old Anna’s focus and memorisation, and her astonishing depth of musical understanding inspired me all those years ago.
What is Music? How do you define it? Music is a calm moonlit night, the rustle of leaves in Summer. Music is the far off peal of bells at dusk! Music comes straight from the heart and talks only to the heart: it is Love! Music is the Sister of Poetry and her Mother is sorrow!

– Sergei Rachmaninov, composer and concert pianist.

Once pupils have developed strong technical skills and confidence, I encourage those who want to take it further to make music with others. This can happen through joining or forming a band, joining a choir (develops aural skills better than anything) and recording. I have strong links with Ian Lewis’s excellent recording studio where many of my music students and associates have recorded. Check out this recording of my vocal band, Soundwall, which I formed in 2011. Since then we have raised over £13k for charities, including Alzheimers, Christies, MSF and HOGS. Several of my music pupils are in Soundwall, which has performed at prestigious UK venues including Theatr Clwyd and the Edinburgh Fringe.

Lessons take place in my bespoke home studio in West Derby Village, Liverpool. Teaching and learning is tailored precisely to your needs and interests. We will look at popular, jazz and classical styles, depending on your tastes, and my aim is always to get you exceeding your wildest expectations with regard to music practice and theory. I encourage the acquisition of notation in piano pupils, whether stave (five lines and dots) or jazz chords/lead sheets. There’s not much demand for figured bass in the 21st century, but if you want to learn it (it’s the Baroque equivalent of the lead sheet) then that’s fine, too!
I am especially interested in performance anxiety issues, and have developed strategies to over come them.
